I know what it is like to kick the earth, or at least a piece of wood. I thought my toe would never recover. I looked around, of course, for someone to blame and there were two dogs pulling on the lead. I bit my tongue in the metaphoric sense, and kept walking.

Life is transient and apparently effervescent. As humans, like other animals, we well designed for life’s practicalities. Dexter and Hannah do not worry about such things. They just live their lives.

Both Dexter and Hannah are as right as the rain now falling, but for April and May the photo record of their jaunts (or walks) have not been realized, although photos were taken. The fact is there are too many photos.

I will just repeat this for the record. What do you think?

Brian Friesen, via Facebook:

“ISIS attacks Iraq. ISIS attacks Afghanistan. ISIS attacks Yemen. ISIS attacks Syria. ISIS attacks Turkey. ISIS attacks Belgium. ISIS attacks France. ISIS supposedly attacks Britain at a time when a Progressive Labour leader is about to be elected. ISIS attacks Philippines as the President of the Philippines criticizes the US, and begins a closer relationship with Russia and China. And now ISIS attacks Iran, just as the Israeli and US governments are whining for war with Iran.

As the BBC noted “It’s been a week of flooding in Peru, a heatwave in India and rain hitting South-East Asia.” And in Australia there has been Cyclone Debbie and its consequences.

The rain keeps falling. As they say it is weather for ducks, and because the creek was flooding we took a walk up to the dam.We had a storm on Wednesday, but with luck and the information that is now readily to hand, we  got home before  it occurred.

The world keeps on turning. That part of the system is pretty constant. Natural systems almost invite variation, and that would be equally true for embedded
sub-systems whether they are human or canine bodies for instance. Still if there were usual variation in the in the rotation of the Earth or its axis, such a change would not escape instant attention.

NOT YET THE END February 12, 2017

At some point at the road of an individual’s life unfurls, there is the realization that the planning horizon has closed in. That may be a very selfish moment, or the culmination of long term selfishness. Other people may inherit a world that will sustain their lives and fulfil their humanity, but that beggars belief and probability given dominant political and economic agendas.

As we are reminded every year the celebration of Christmas has pagan associations. It suggests to me that much of the population of Western Europe were nominally Christian and that folk traditions were remembered and continued, especially at the periphery. Arguably,in that sense, not much has changed

The election of Donald Trump to become in due course the American President is an extraordinary development. Given the campaign, he made a gracious acceptance of Hillary Ciinton’s phone call acknowledging defeat. As far as I know she has not made a public announcement.

Some memories are clear. Some are not. I remember the Latin inscription under the clock at school, Tempus Fugit. It turns out that time does fly. The more recent to take time and not rush despite the demands sometimes placed over us. By making a random selection of photos, I am attempting to compress time, while overcoming the problem of sameness.

Metaphors aside, the birds that can be heard, but not exactly understood, do actually fly. In so far as they speak to me – perhaps poetically – I understand them to say, “You humans forget about us”. The irony is that is not all we forget about.

The election ran for eight weeks, and then the count took days to sort out who had a bare majority in the House of Reps to form the government. I tired of being told seemingly endlessly that the 76 members represented an absolute majority.

BREXIT: Done And Dusted? June 26, 2016

My reaction to the apparent decision to exit the European Union was surprise. Can this really be happening? Greece came to mind. They had a referendum and then the leadership of Syriza folded. I never understood why you would hold a referendum and get over 60% support and then say in effect we will accept the severest austerity terms. Then the Scots had a referendum on independence, and the majority wanted to stick with the English, especially those on the border lands. So I thought the same response would prevail with Brexit. Take, for example, the non-existent borders surround Gibraltar and between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
