Former Naval Captain John Ingram was reported by ABC News that turning refugee boats away and forcing them back to Indonesia was not the Navy’s way of doing things. He is most likely right. It seems that the Government has involved the Navy and Military in “Operation Sovereign Borders” in a way that politicizes them, and in a way that by inference ignores their advice about these operations.

Many events occur, with some having more historical significance than others. Perhaps representative of a pervasive maladroitness richly on display by Australian Federal Ministers, it nonetheless interesting, if trivial, to hear the Australian Foreign Minister describe Edward Snowden as a “traitor”.

Governor Jerry Brown with reluctance declared California to be in drought last Friday. On its face this is surprising since it is summer here, it must be winter there. Furthermore, this is another extreme weather circumstance, occurring in a not a La Nina or El Nina year.

FRAMING REFUGEE POLICY January 10, 2014

I am looking for wider debate and discussion on the refugee question. For example, why punish refugees, if the purpose is to punish those who profit from organizing their trips? Dehumanization of people in desperate circumstances is a start of an inevitable sequence of violence, including the mistreatment  of young children and their mothers. The urge to finds more creative solutions leads from a “pacific” solution to necessary cruelty.

My first response is denial or skepticism. The claims cannot possibly be true. Then again, how would I know? If these claims were true, it might be helpful. It is easy to be dismissive. To ignore evidence.The only thing to do is to try it.

We keep on going back again.  Dexter, and in particular Hannah, miss going out, when that happens. The dogs spend some time  following scents and odd and ends along the way, which is a worry.The good thing is that we get home seemingly OK.

2014 will mark hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War. So thing could get worse. The prime minister  believes in climate change denial.The Government believes in the remedial powers of violence in relation to refugees and asylum seekers .
