I keep on meeting Buddha. I wish he would get off my case. His appearance is more metaphysical than physical. I went to see the doctor at the hospital – he was not Buddha – he matter of factly said, I do not expect you to be alive in five years. That is what he expects with a person with my condition to live. I have organized for a second opinion, but I would be surprised if the diagnosis was radically changed.

There has been a lapse of two months. The photos overwelm me. There is just too many of them. This video I am posting was created through Microsoft. It is far from a consciousness effort, but hopefully to those few who may be interested, it may have some value.

I was walking a few kilometers every day. I thought I was going OK. Dexter and Hannah express disappointment if I do not take them out. Then I was undermined what I thought at the time would be a critical injury. I seemed to tear my knee and the muscles. I had difficulty getting out of a chair. The remedy, after going to the doctor was, simple and almost immediately effective. The application of anti-inflammatory gel worked almost immediately.

The rain keeps falling. As they say it is weather for ducks, and because the creek was flooding we took a walk up to the dam.We had a storm on Wednesday, but with luck and the information that is now readily to hand, we  got home before  it occurred.

The world keeps on turning. That part of the system is pretty constant. Natural systems almost invite variation, and that would be equally true for embedded
sub-systems whether they are human or canine bodies for instance. Still if there were usual variation in the in the rotation of the Earth or its axis, such a change would not escape instant attention.

El Nino and Rain in South America December 31, 2015

It was a puzzle to me as how El Nino would be attributed as the cause for the heavy rain and flooding in Northern Argentina, Southern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. So I posed the question at Skeptical Science with responses: How did El Nino bring on these heavy rains?.

I posted comments at Catallaxy, to some expected hostility (perhaps understandable since I transgressed into their territory) but mostly in “dialogue” with Bruce of Newcastle. I am re-posting to keep and add links, and to review what I presented.

Can Natural Variation explain Climate Change? June 26, 2015

Climate for many of us is outside our preview. It is said that weather forecasts are accurate up to about five days. If you said to me that 1998 was a particularly hot year, I would have to say I did not notice at the time, and I cannot remember. Although, short of consulting with neighbours, I think it was around that time that one day the trains stopped, got on bus and drove through a flooded highway. I could be wrong.

“Making Sense of Climate Denial” June 8, 2015

Several arguments have been proposed to deny the implications of climate change, its scientific causality and its political implications. Often, and contrary to expectations the proponents of climate science denial are capable scientific and mathematical reasoners. This was supported in this research by Kahan et al. The implication is that scientific denial arises from motivated reasoning. Rather than to be dismissive of others such an observation might illuminate a greater sense of self awareness.

Systematic climate change has political implications. All human beings live on the same planet. I notice (to my surprise) that people seem to respond directly to photos of the sky and clouds and the stars. We share the atmosphere and the ocean.

Climate change is a problem that will not go away. It is as Kevin Rudd said: “the greatest moral, economic and social challenge of our time” I would prefer to describe it as “the defining issue of our time” – a rhetoric co-opted for income inequality.

The  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is an interesting institution within which climate scientists from around the globe work together.  What is possible for science, remains impossible for politics. I notice that the report is dedicated to the memory of  Stephen H. Schneider 1945 – 2010.
