The Abbott Government finds untrammelled enthusiasm, alacrity and “hang the cost” to join the coalition of the killing  in the sky over Iraq in stark contrast with a stubborn disinclination and outright refusal to assist with the humanitarian crisis caused by the ebola epidemic in West Africa. What gives?

Homo Sapien Sapiens probably need now to again push the boundaries. Let’s suppose that adventure, courage and technology enabled the Polynesians to discover the far flung islands of the Pacific between 900 to 1000 CE, which might have begun with moving the campsite over the mountain into the next valley. Let’s not run down the species it learns as it goes, and as it learns it qualitatively changes.

It may seem odd that political attention and resources are focused now on Sunni extremists, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and not on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa or Climate Change. We are told that the Government’s focus is to keep Australians safe.
