Egypt had an election two years ago with President Morsi’s election, and now Cairo’s Nahda Square and the space adjoining The Rabaa al-Adawija Mosque are filled with smoke from burning tyres, Police and Army vehicles and bulldozers with protesters.

Public protest has developed in countries where dissatisfaction was unexpected, at least by those in power, notably in Turkey and Brazil. In recent days, the protests and counter protests in Egypt, if only because of the their size, have gained attention.

Ostensibly the purpose of the no-fly zone over Libya was to protect the civilian population from a government that sought to attack them and kill many of them by artillery fire and aerial bombing.

Could it be that the Libyan War we have witnessed at a distance was not primarily a civil uprising, despite Gaddafi’s 42 years in government, but another example of active neo-imperialism from the usual suspects Britain, France and the United States?

The Libyan Government based in Tripoli is now prepared to make concessions to end the civil war, and the UN endorsed and Nato aerial bombing campaign designed to save civilians.

The Guardian reports Nato has sent a British and French advisory team to Benghazi to advise the anti-Gaddafi forces on “intelligence gathering, logistics and communications”. In the meanwhile bombing continues to protect civilians.

Long story short: peace is not an option. That at least is what the proponents of the Libyan intervention argue, despite the fact that the African Union delegation, led by South African President Zuma appears to have got Muammur Gaddafi’s approval for a ceasefire.

The situation for Muammar Gaddafi holed up in Tripoli is not as hopeless as it might seem, and consequently his fall not so inexorable. He has it seems the support of the Algerian Regime (together with the mediating efforts of Hugo Chavez).

Muammar Gaddafi is blaming bin Laden, the young and drugs for the recent events in Libya in an address over the State television broadcaster. (Apparently the speech was made by phone – can you believe it. I did not understand what I was watching).

The dictator of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, is now as good as gone, although in a vain attempt to retain power, but not legitimacy, the massacre of people may continue. The problem will be then to form a new government, albeit an transitional arrangement.
