FRIDAY NIGHT DOG BLOG: “NO CROTCHETS OR QUAVERS” May 31, 2013

It does not stop me talking to them, but I suspect often and know in equal measure that Dexter and Hannah don’t listen to me. In the bush if you make a noise, other people become aware of our presence.

I remember during my formal education – whatever that was – the suggestion was made to have fewer words and more meaning. Two qualifications apply. Remembering is not the same as learning, although we imagine that dogs are simply rote learners supported by partial conditioning. Secondly not all primary meaning can be encoded in words, and nor for dogs is it necessary.

For me this week was particularly difficult because I had some sought of condition that was resistant to does of Vitamin C, and so after two weeks I relented and went to see a doctor, who prescribed some anti-biotics – so we see how that goes.

Let’s leave the path and go tangential. Might I suggest, or even challenge you, to envisage one of those stories in which the protagonist travels through a familiar landscape. The story is set in the future, and so will shock the now living. The aim would be to show from the future the impact of the ecosystem crisis which will be compounded both by population movement and atmospheric greenhouse gas triggers. Catastrophe is a better description.  All the more reason to do nothing much. The extreme bushfire alert from last Summer continues to haunt me.

Dexter and Hannah have a philosophical position. They live in the present. Perhaps they expect that human beings to have the wit to see ahead in that sense.
