HELEN THOMAS GETS TIME November 17, 2010

Months later, after her sacking for thought crime, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, Helen Thomas gets the chance to put her side of the story.

What an impressive democracy! Such a commitment to reason and justice that would have the founders of the American Republic beaming with pride. The comedic question is how low can they go? This is the country, supposedly espousing democratic principles and the rule of law, in which a public official at his personal whim can kill anybody he chooses, for any reason, at any time. A modern version of Caligula, given the excuse for craziness, is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

So how did it come to this? Having acknowledged the problem, the answer requires a careful and comprehensive answer. One approach would be switch historical contexts and ask, for example, why was it that during the course of the English Civil Wars that the Parliamentarians, contrary to the inclination of the Army to use Court-martials, decided on an open trial of a king, much like an American president, who claimed absolute powers. Are problems in the political system, in essence, structural or personal?

Still Helen Thomas gets to have her say:

As far as, I am aware, followers of the Judaism have not experienced widespread or systematic discrimination in Australia or New Zealand. Some broad brush statements are not correct.

Helen gets time to present her side of the story, but only when nobody is listening or her case has ceased to be topical and therefore of interest.
