THE RUSSIANS DONE IT? December 7, 2009

So who was responsible for hacking the University of East Anglia emails? One suggestion it was the Russian Secret Service, and as Agatha Christie might have noticed they had a motive. In these examples circumstantial evidence clinches the case.

At the very least we can say interesting speculation. Will Stewart and Martin Delgado have the story with the Mail Online. They write in breathless, hushed tones:

Suspicions were growing last night that Russian security services were behind the leaking of the notorious British ‘Climategate’ emails which threaten to undermine tomorrow’s Copenhagen global warming summit.
An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has discovered that the explosive hacked emails from the University of East Anglia were leaked via a small web server in the formerly closed city of Tomsk in Siberia.
The leaks scandal has left the scientific community in disarray after claims that key climate change data was manipulated in the run-up to the climate change summit of world leaders. . .

And so it goes. “Motive, Ms Christie, motive!”. The report notes:

Russia – one of the world’s largest producers and users of oil and gas – has a vested interest in opposing sweeping new agreements to cut emissions, which will be discussed by world leaders in Copenhagen tomorrow.
Russia believes current rules are stacked against it, and has threatened to pull the plug on Copenhagen without concessions to Kremlin concerns.
The Mail on Sunday understands that the hundreds of hacked emails were released to the world via a tiny internet server in a red brick building in a snow-clad street in Tomsk.

Of course read the full article. The plot works because the climate deniers are working in league with the Russians, and by implication they are part of an conspiracy. The excitement and the Earth is on the boil.

UPDATE:

ABC News Online reports that “divisions run deep in Copenhagen”. Climate Change deniers are using the Climategate emails to buttress their case. The report notes:

The screams of climate change catastrophe continued to be interrupted by sceptics, who seized on leaked emails from the Climate Change Unit of Britain’s University of East Anglia.

Saudi Arabia’s negotiator Mohammed Al-Sabban addressed the conference, claiming there were still questions around the science of man-made global warming.

He said the so-called ‘Climate-gate’ episode had shaken trust in the scientific literature.

But his American counterpart, Jonathan Pershing, strongly disagreed, making it clear that the United States was committed to reaching a strong political agreement when President Barack Obama travels to the Danish capital next week.

“What I think is unfortunate, and in fact shameful, is the way some scientists who have devoted their lives are being pilloried in the press without due regard to the process,” he said.

“The science is incredibly robust.”

The question, morality aside, then is will the interests prevail over the facts. However, with this report, and the Mail On Sunday Investigation, there is an impression that the “climate change deniers” are not simply the people trained to be electrical engineers who claim their scientific credentials are equal to the climate scientists.
