DEPRESSION September 21, 2009

Andrew Robb’s decision to step down from the Opposition frontbench while he was suffering from a depressive illness was probably more wise than heroic, and might have reflected the medical advice given.

Those of us who do not suffer from such a illness often find it difficult to understand. On reflection, it must be dreadful not to be able to move past it, as most of us can if we were to suffer mild depression, and to know too, to be aware that this condition would reoccur. The condition is bad enough for the ordinary person, who perhaps may not get the understanding from those around them who they discuss their illness. Sometimes we have not only to be aware of our own health, but for those whose proximity make us responsible, which is the only justification I can think of for anybody supplying me with the excellent medical care I get.

The ABC reported:

There has been a show of support for Federal Liberal frontbencher Andrew Robb who has announced he is standing down while he deals with a depressive illness.

Mr Robb is suffering from diurnal variation, a biochemical disorder, and will move to the backbench temporarily while he gets treatment.

Public figures for better and ill are subject to pressures unknown to the rest of us. Andrew Robb said he felt better for having openly spoken about the condition, and the good news is that it can be treated. In the immediate term to take it easy, step back, and get better is the way to go.

Naturally, Beyond Blue issued a statement supporting the public statement. Still the problem remains for more vulnerable people who may have a illness, but not a medical diagnosis and caught as well by the effects of economic depression.

Postscript:

Slightly flippant comment, but I know from talking to people around the place, we are somewhat disappointed that St George Illawarra took a dive against the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday. Next year perhaps. By way of clarification, I should point out I have not been following the team, since I am such a bad sport I only support winners.

ELSEWHERE:

As a fatigued person, not so much now due to the medication, I notice from the automatic links the suggestion that depression causes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and that the incidence is four times more likely in women.Prednisone causes the opposite problem. A person has to be careful about being too hyped.

John Pitt in New Matilda argues that depression is a male disease because instead of talking about the things that trouble us. Much conversation is small talk and it seems to be appropriate.

It is encouraging to read that Andrew Robb has received support from people in his electorate.
