HALE PETE SEEGER May 3, 2009

Pete Seeger, singer, song writer and activist, turned 90 on 3 May and is still going strong.

He is both a link to the past and an expression of those American opinions which are not represented in the mainstream media or much, if at all, in Congress. One day, America might be transformed from a great Eighteen Century democracy. That change will be something to witness, even to sing about.

We all learn stuff at school about us and them, but the Seeger dream is one day all the world will sing one song, we will all hold to one story. In the meantime:

One of the most engaging conversations I have ever seen is shown at The Nation between Peter Seeger and Majora Carter. They compliment each other. It is worth a look.

Pete Seeger comments on Martin Luther King (unfortunately abbreviated):

Peekskill is known more broadly because of the Peekskill Riots but in an earlier history it was the sight of the Underground Railway.

Thank you for posting on Pete Seeger. How can anyone not LOVE this man and his message of love?! Happy Blessed Birthday, Mr. Seeger!

Imagine what can be done with a banjo?

I had not heard of the sloops plying the Hudson in 1860’s, or the Peekskill Riots.

I don’t know if I am right, but it seems to me time and again that local politics are always about the same set of issues. So we can learn from one another.

Pete Seeger does not seem to carry forward any residual bitterness.

“Pete Seeger does not seem to carry forward any residual bitterness.”

So true, wmmbb!

I love your opening question.

Thanks for the comment Judith.

Pete Seeger’s faith in the American peoples commitment to free speech is more than of passing interest.
