D Petraeus is the military hero, he has a chest full of nineteen rows of military decorations, who appeared before the US Congress to claim that the escalation ordered by G W Bush is working, and as a result the number of troops in Iraq will be reduced by 30,000 to restore the situation ante. Petraeus reports to W Fallon, who seems to take a less heroic view of the general, and has significantly different strategic understanding of the situation in the Middle East and South Asia.

These military politics do not seem to be reported by the infotainment industry. It is suggested at their first meeting Fallon was less than flattering about Petraeus. He is reportd as describing him:

. . . as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.

Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” and added, “I hate people like that”, the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior.

Fallon seems to have the better strategic appreciation, which he identifies as Pakistan, and the surge is bottling up the US army and marines, and limiting the ability to respond in an unstable and dangerous region. Apparently, the culture in the US Navy – Fallon is an Admiral – is antithetical to sycophants.

The damage done to the professional US Army is one of the costs of the Iraqi adventure. It is curious and interesting that there should apparently be such fierce contest about strategic objectives in the US military.
