Political power decides reality until the point is reached when reality defines political power. Something like this seems to be playing in relation to the extreme weather events and climate patterns that are becoming so apparent that they can no longer be ignored.

. . . the Uberpower clings to denial of defeat, stumbles from crisis to crisis, with the injection of violence and hatred as the surefire antidote. Never mind the human or financial costs of the great strategic game. No lessons learned, let’s move on.

I found the story of the Ballarat mosque on Facebook. It was put up by the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR). In its way it is an illustration of how in the era of developing modern communications, the local and global merge.

We may have been fortunate to have escaped the really hot weather occurring elsewhere, yet it is important to realize that dogs are vulnerable to hot temperatures. I thought I would attempt a sense of place with and beyond the dog walk photos.

REFUGEE POLICY: “MORALLY CORRUPT AND INDEFENSIBLE” January 30, 2014

Former Naval Captain John Ingram was reported by ABC News that turning refugee boats away and forcing them back to Indonesia was not the Navy’s way of doing things. He is most likely right. It seems that the Government has involved the Navy and Military in “Operation Sovereign Borders” in a way that politicizes them, and in a way that by inference ignores their advice about these operations.

EDWARD SNOWDEN: A TRAITOR? January 24, 2014

Many events occur, with some having more historical significance than others. Perhaps representative of a pervasive maladroitness richly on display by Australian Federal Ministers, it nonetheless interesting, if trivial, to hear the Australian Foreign Minister describe Edward Snowden as a “traitor”.

Governor Jerry Brown with reluctance declared California to be in drought last Friday. On its face this is surprising since it is summer here, it must be winter there. Furthermore, this is another extreme weather circumstance, occurring in a not a La Nina or El Nina year.

FRAMING REFUGEE POLICY January 10, 2014

I am looking for wider debate and discussion on the refugee question. For example, why punish refugees, if the purpose is to punish those who profit from organizing their trips? Dehumanization of people in desperate circumstances is a start of an inevitable sequence of violence, including the mistreatment  of young children and their mothers. The urge to finds more creative solutions leads from a “pacific” solution to necessary cruelty.

My first response is denial or skepticism. The claims cannot possibly be true. Then again, how would I know? If these claims were true, it might be helpful. It is easy to be dismissive. To ignore evidence. The only thing to do is to try it.

“No, no, Dexo I won’t let you go”. I know where you will head, and I will have to follow in your wake, and then persuade you somehow, usually by sitting down on the pavement, to come back, after you have had your adventure. As for Hannay, we are on the way to Scotland if I take the high road, or the low road, you will be following or around somewhere close.

EDUCATION WAS FOR SOMETHING December 20, 2013

We are born. We spend a fixed amount of time within the matrix of the Earth’s ecosystem, sometimes at psychological, psychic distance from mother nature, while simultaneously indifferently trashing and despoiling her foundations and fundamentals. We are somehow thoroughly culturally conditioned. We had better know something of the environment of ideas we inhabit. Then we die.
