The treatment of refugees in off shore detention continues to witness disturbing developments. Australia has now become party to likely violations of human rights, including murder. The Prime Minister does not know what is going on, and the Cabinet process appears broken.

The Immigration Minister commented that the refugee/prisoners at Manus Island were given breakfast the next morning after the riot that he initially attributed to the asylum seekers. Now The Guardian has published video footage describing the situation as a “war zone”.

FRAMING REFUGEE POLICY January 10, 2014

I am looking for wider debate and discussion on the refugee question. For example, why punish refugees, if the purpose is to punish those who profit from organizing their trips? Dehumanization of people in desperate circumstances is a start of an inevitable sequence of violence, including the mistreatment  of young children and their mothers. The urge to finds more creative solutions leads from a “pacific” solution to necessary cruelty.

According to The Guardian, doctors are reporting mistreatment of refugees, specifically unaccompanied minors, as well as health issues related to pregnant women and children. The Guardian has recorded a series of recent reports.
