I reacted to the news of the death of Howard Zinn, the American historian.
I was wondering whether my reaction had some relation to “the cult of celebrity” in a video age. Democracy Now had recorded a recent Howard Zinn speech, “Holy Wars”, which I then in playing around with the platform’s possibilities had loaded onto facebook as a recent, and very laggard adapter. What is striking about the presentation of the speech is that the video captures the human quality of the speaker, and I think that is the reason that Howard Zinn’s death affects me.
He was 87, and so I suppose he had a good innings – and a productive one. His message that democracy is about continuing struggle and success is one that resonates with me as I wonder what I should do as a citizen within a democracy.
Raw Story turned up an interview conducted with Howard Zinn in September, 2005. Democracy Now has a tribute to Howard Zinn.
