FRIDAY NIGHT DOG BLOG – LIGHT AND DARKNESS October 4, 2008

The warm weather started to kick in today.According to the Weather Bureau it was 34 degrees Celsius (approximately 93 degrees Fahrenheit).
Since I was asked to take into account that Sasha is getting older, we delayed our walk, so it became quite dark quickly.

The wattles continue to bud and bloom:
Left alone for the day, Cooper came over to visit and join the expedition.

Dexter and Cooper:
A threesome of sorts:
Since Cooper does not join us often, a central billing is appropriate:
Sasha found a snake in the grass:
Dexter in a peaceful mood:
Sasha similarly disposed:
It must be a plane?
We will try this week to get on board Friday Ark before the tide turns.
There is a moment in Denis Kuchinich’s address to the Democratic National Convention when he mentions peace. The camera catches the look on the person’s face, as though that concept cannot be expressed. To what extent has violence been normalized? Many of us live on “the edge of darkness”, as Cat Stevens observed in his song:

Sasha…old? She looks quite young. In fact, dogs are always young at heart…they never stop wanting to play, and they are always happy to receive a belly-rub!
The snake’s a dandy! Look at him…and his eyes (at least the one that’s visible) is beautiful. Nice picture. I hope you were all very careful.
So Cooper stole the limelight this Friday. Hmm…it’s really nice of D&S not to mind that…I’d have minded it very much.
Thanks a ton for these nice pictures. BTW, what’s that black monolith – is it a “Menhir” (Of the Astrix comics fame?)
Licks n Wags,
Oorvi
The thinking was that we should be careful with Sasha now in the hot weather. We have had her eight years. In fact, she was playing with Cooper, the same day we saw the snake.
I am pretty sure that it was a red-belly black snake, which as the color indicates it is venomous, and so therefore a problem had it bitten Sasha – or anybody really. I did not see it bite Sasha, and I could not see any signs on her skin or paws. It is best to avoid these problems and encounters if we can, and that is something the snake is usually agrees with as well, except that in this case Sasha picked it up out of the grass.
Naturally, I started yelling at her to put it down which she did, but in the process it got caught up in the lead. Fortunately, I was holding Dexter and Cooper back, and the snake seems to have not suffered too much harm.
Sasha and Dexter do not mind Cooper much now. He is part of the team, so in fairness the limelight should shine on him. He is after all a locally famous and determined escapologist.
The black monolith-like objects are charcoal tree stumps, that has a symbolic value as you suggest, but as a reminder that we live here in a fire-prone environment. Fires are sometimes caused by, we might prefer to believe, by human error, but fire has a inanimate, remorseless agency. Now it is up to me to do what I can to reduce the risk and the potential damage around our property – which of course I have not done.
The value of these photos is that they remind of things to do, and watch out for. Thank you again for your comments Oorvi.
By the way, selecting the videos can be a headache, so if you have any suggestions, I am happy to give them consideration. Music, in any variety, is not something I know much about.
Oh Mr. wmmbb,
Why do you think I never comment on your music videos? I was born tone-deaf…and this goes for Mercury too. She couldn’t tell apart the national anthem and Happy B/Day, and so she jumps to her feet when she hears any of the two!
I wish I could recommend something…I’ll talk to Cameo. He’s fond of music but I don’t know whether you are fine with the likes of Led Zep and Pink Floyd (I don’t know whether I got those spellings right…) Any way, I’ll ask him…
Nice to know that Cooper is now part of the team:)
Snakes are okay. Mercury’s spent her early years in the Himalayas and Rajasthan (the Thar desert) so she is quite comfortable with snakes. (She’s giving me that squinty-eye threatening look – okay…correction – she doesn’t give them hugs n kisses, she simply doesn’t mind having them around at a safe distance!…There now….Mercury…I’ve clarified it to Mr. wmmbb. You can stop giving me that blistering white hot look!)
Licks n Wags,
Oorvi
Very amusing about the national anthem/birthday thing. The mind boggles. Still, I suppose, you have to be sure.
Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd are good options.
Cooper escapes, hits the street, visits whoever he visits, and then seems to turn up at our next door neighbour’s Chris’s gates knowing he will get a decent feed, or else waits for me to see him and then I put him in our front yard. I give him some dog biscuits. He has a sense of entitlement, and does not seem to want to escape. I leave a note on his owner’s door and he in due course picks him up. Dexter and Sasha do not seem to mind.
I respect Mercury’s reaction to snakes, because I know that in India and Australia, it is best to be very careful in relation to them, especially for dogs.
The threesome certainly seem to be enjoying the time, even in the heat. My goodness but that is warm! Hard to take in when we are in cooling off mode. Your pictures and the dogs happy faces have me missing my walks with my dogs. Sadly, Sadie is still unable to go for jaunts and I just can’t bring myself to go without her.
From memory it was not too hot when Cooper joined us. The weather can be very changeable. The next day was far cooler. We are starting to get the summer pattern with lightning storms that frighten me. What to do – run for it, seek cover?
I recognize the problem you have with Sadie. What we used to do in that situation was to take the dogs out separately. But maybe Sadie cannot go out at all, so maybe you could take her for a short run in the car?
Thank you for your comments, Colleen.
