WALKING TO TOMORROW September 23, 2008

The challenge before the world is whether there is a collective ability to walk and chew gum, as Lyndon Johnson memorably said (or was reinterpreted as saying). The problem is not so much juggling as setting priorities.
For example, if resources are allocated to addressing the problem with capital markets, can they as well be directed to the climate problem, and is it by necessity concluded that the war of terror is a distraction, not to mention to the newly discovered cold war with Russia. The Bush Administration, and its clones around the world, may in the perspective of the future be able to seen as a very problematic administration that put narrow self interest over the greater good, and that lead to ultimate disaster and not just for the United States. The problem may simply be that neither we, or our descendants, will be around to commiserate. Much like the proliferation of nuclear weapons we at a time when as human beings we are collectively challenged on the grounds of sanity, which we might eventually get around to, but the bigger problem is that the window of opportunity is closing as we wistfully gaze at it in amazement, like Romeo at the duel.
