Millions of people across the globe are now, or so I imagine, will be watching the Olympics, and this will truly be a shared experience. Whether that experience is summarized by the positioning statement is another matter. One World, One Dream indeed. Cynicism, as distinct from questioning, is corrosive. There are times when global consciousness can be changed.

One such possible occasion was the moon landing in 1969. This moment can be relived via you tube:

But for me the transformation occurred when I first saw the earth from the moon. The significance of these moments is not that it is personal but that is shared by many people around the world watching the same event at the same time. Here is the short clip, in which the picture is almost as bad as the commentary directed presumably for the domestic US audience:

As others have noted, the conflicts that seem so important now shrink into relative insignificance when we see ourselves as a whole. Governments and others are missing an opportunity by not using space imagery to show the effects of global warming. We would get a greater sense of what is happening to our part of the world, and the other parts, in a wholistic way, and we all would be more inclined to act with expedition and uniformity, rather than squabbling over who should do what. For a common danger, we need a common response.
