FRIDAY NIGHT DOG BLOG – WINTER SOLSTICE June 21, 2008
Posted by wmmbb in DOG BLOG -.trackback
In our household we mark off medication and treatments to dogs on the calendar. That is how I found out that today is the Winter Solstice. I suspect that there should be a pagan festival to mark the event, but perhaps in Northern Europe it would have been too cold to celebrate the shortest day of the year. Time to reflect how important of the rotation of the earth and the moon to life on earth.
We stop at the same place almost everyday, but the dogs are still keenly interested:
Dexter looks over the edge:
A rare sight: Let’s put our heads together:
Dexter happy to wait while Sasha roams off who knows where:
Sitting on the same log affords the opportunity for a close up of Dexter:
Just to give the idea that rain loomed if it did not fall:
Dexter in recent months has taken to lying down:
When you are on the lead it is not possible to seek adventure:
Unlike the previous day:
This week we will take a different journey to Friday Ark at Modulator and see how it turns out.
Lisa Thiel sings the Winter Solstice Song: “open your eyes to embrace what is wise”:
Chorus:
Enter the night and you’ll find the light,
That will carry you to your dreams.
Enter the night, let your spirit take flight,
In the field of infinite possibilitiesOn the longest night we search for the light,
And we find it deep within.
Open your eyes to embrace what is wise,
And see the light of your own soul shining.(Chorus)
Wrap up in the cloak of starry darkness my child, And you’ll find the center of all things.
For from this space of the deepest dark place,
Life Eternal does spring.(Chorus)
So when you find that spark
When you dream in the dark,
Hold it close to your heart and know.
All that you see is all that can be
When you give birth to the dreams of your soul.(Chorus)
ELSEWHERE:
The Economist ponders the question: What makes the Solstice moon so huge? While I recognized there was a full moon, I was not aware of this particular illusion. In fact, until I read about it on the calendar I was unaware of solstice at all, in its own way evidence of my ignorance and unawareness of the natural world. Still, that is where other people come in to share their perceptions, and so enlighten us, or otherwise.

Knowing that you are celebrating the shortest day while we here are heralding the longest leaves me even more in wonder of it all.
Thanks Colleen,
This technology seems to permit globalization from below, which was not as possible before the internet came along. Furthermore, the seasons result from the axial tilt of the earth, and the planet seems to have got the angle about right.
Hi, Mr. wmmbb! I didn’t know that you were experiencing winters! We are in the middle of summers here.
You are right when you say that it isn’t possible to seek adventure when you are on the lead. However, the pictures tell me that Sasha and Dexter are happy to be so near to nature!
Wags,
Oorvi
Thanks Oorvi,
It is a topsy turvy world, don’t you think, depending on which end you live? By the way that explains why I do not associate the Winter Solstice with Christmas.
Sasha and Dexter do appear to get a great deal of pleasure out of their walks, but then again I as a mere human find it difficult to get inside their consciousness which is differently constructed with great sensitivity to smell and wider hearing range and so forth, not to mention the four legs/two legs difference.
We have plans to be joined by another dog on our walks, and that will depend on how friendly Dexter is among other considerations. Hopefully, the photos will follow, one way or another.
Is this new dog joining your family…or is he/she just a visitor? BTW, there is something on my blog that may interest you (I am sure you’ve got a strong schema for concept-marketing, which is a very human concept!)
Do check out the Principles of Concept Marketing, by…well, who else?
Wags,
Oorvi
Jock has been barking and driving the neighbours nuts, as dogs do when left to on their own, but it is not their fault. So we thought, I would volunteer to take him out. His owner seems quite happy for me to take him out, which I find astounding.
I figure that if he can join Sasha and Dexter, and I can manage that meeting, and then Jock will be one extra dog. We have our teething problems, and on our second outing today things went better. Sasha was taken with Jock, and now she is tired as I am. There are photos, but I will keep them until Friday.
I am heading over to your place Oorvi to check out the Principles of Concept Marketing. . .
Oorvi,
I might have misunderstood what you were on about. It happens all the time with me.
Hi Mr. wmmbb,
Thanks for visiting:) I don’t think you misunderstood, but I guess you may have experienced the lack of context clarity! Actually, I live with Mercury and Cameo, and they own a company. They are on the lookout for a good marketing personnel and I think I am absolutely right for the job. In fact, now that I’ve been selected, I think the marketing principles worked!
(I just made my post on the interview.)
I think you are doing something great by taking Jock out. We like to spend our time with people who enjoy our company, not with…well, the likes of Jock’s owner!
I’ll wait for the pictures:)
Licks and Wags,
Oorvi
Well congratulations Oorvi. Good work.
I have to say Jock is a bit of a winner too, as you will see. As for Paula, his human companion, she does a very good job in lots of ways, except that the walks were lacking.
When they came back today, they had great fun in our backyard – I had to stand clear or be run over.
I guess Paula is a bit like Mercury! It’s okay then…In fact, I don’t mind Mercury at all:)
I hope you check out Jock’s photos Oorvi.
. . . and by the way, it would be good to see more of yours, and not just the studio photos.
Did you visit the album page?
Here’s the link.

I know I photograph well, and I know that I should put more pictures of mine on the blog…but who’d explain that to Mercury! She isn’t what you call…what’s it….a shutterbug?
Also see http://oorvi.wordpress.com/canidoscope/ for pictures of some other pups (that tells you something about her…she goes around clicking pictures of other pups too…some loyalty!)
She’s been clicking that contraption around me recently, so I expect she’d make some of those pictures blog-ready soon – I’ll let you know when I update the Album:)
Love n Licks,
Oorvi
Great Oorvi.
Nice photos.
Thanks, Mr. wmmbb:)
