Voting systems are entrenched in political cultures. The fact is that different electoral systems produce different results in terms of representation.

WAR CRIMES PROSECUTION June 29, 2008

The International Criminal Court, or Cour Penale Internationale, has been active since July, 2002. War crimes are part of its mandate, but its jurisdiction is limited by the acceptance of national governments, and the major holdout is the bastion of international law, the United States of America.

Until Wednesday, the walks were more or less routine. The sun goes down over the escarpment now in the middle of winter, so the our timing is by the sun. Then we were joined by Jock, who lives around the corner and across from the back fence.

Obscenity comes in degrees, in shades of gray. Our humanity cannot, and must not, tolerate this behavior, from anybody. This is no mere accident. It is an inevitable consequence of the policies and practices imperialism and military occupation. Pure and simple, it is a war crime.

ZIMBABWE June 25, 2008

From memory, when the Rhodesian colonists discovered the ruins of the ancient civilization of Zimbabwe they attributed it to other than the native African people of the area. They attributed the stone monuments to Egyptians, a north Saharan African people. Such is the effect of racism, economic and social domination that leads to dehumanization. That is one set of legacies of the imperial system, along with dispossession of land, marginalization of existence and cultural violence.

MISSILE SHIELDS AND HUNGER STRIKES June 24, 2008

The American, corporate, global military system is attempting to place its missile shields in the Czech Republic blind to history. Unlike most of us, the Czech’s know how to do nonviolence. Recently in Marlborough, New Zealand, peace activists took to the installations there with bolt cutters and hammers causing damage, but perhaps failing to open the minds and hearts of the violent oppressors.

NEW WORLD ORDERS June 23, 2008

New world orders were once associated with the overt policies of Hitler, the Japanese Fascists and similar aspirations, but I suppose world orders are consistent with political systems of power and domination, and must necessarily provide the context for the American Empire and Corporate Globalization. The notion of Pax Romana seems to be just a historical artifact without exemplary power, as if justice has nothing to do with it. If the oil is in the Iraq, then we will fabricate within fabrications to take it for ourselves. No one will notice, and if they do the rule of the stronger will prevail. This is the way the world works, and we have a paradigm with the underlying, unquestioned, premise of violence.

Tibet’s Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party proclaimed that nonviolent protest will be smashed with state violence. He obviously believes that physical power is the ultimate power. Of course, he is right, such threat power can be used to kill people, but it cannot build a united society which seems to be his other aim.

FRIDAY NIGHT DOG BLOG – WINTER SOLSTICE June 21, 2008

In our household we mark off medication and treatments to dogs on the calendar. That is how I found out that today is the Winter Solstice. I suspect that there should be a pagan festival to mark the event, but perhaps in Northern Europe it would have been too cold to celebrate the shortest day of the year. Time to reflect how important of the rotation of the earth and the moon to life on earth.

The peace announced between Hamas and Israel in relation to Gaza appears to be good news in that it will serve the end the killing and suffering of the Gazan people. Something had to happen, and thankfully it did. The Egyptians apparently acted as the go betweens, and the border between Egypt and Gaza will no longer be subject to Israeli control.

EVIL THOUGHTS June 17, 2008

As perhaps is the way of oppositions and governments, the Federal Opposition, from reports today, was grandstanding in Parliament concerning comments made to the pregnant Mrs Mirabella, the member for Indi (Vic) by Ms Neal, the member of Robertson (NSW). Putting aside the fact that the Labor member had apologized to the aggrieved Liberal parliamentarian, the actual words used, though not said kindly, may have some truth as a general statement, although what effect the mental state of the mother has on the unborn is a separate question.

One supposed that the Rudd Government was a change for the better, but perhaps the existing Immigration Laws have not changed.

ABC News Online reports that a Chinese dissident committed suicide after a forced deportation order from Australia:

Refugee advocates are calling for better treatment for people seeking protection visas, after a man who was forcibly returned to China from Australia killed himself.

EMPIRE OR REPUBLIC? June 15, 2008

Robert Scheer, at Truthdig, observes in conclusion of his analysis of the question Empire or Republic? :

What is going on in our name is irrational, costly and dangerous, but there are powerful vested interests that want to keep it that way. Those interests remain so strong that neither Barack Obama nor John McCain has called for cutting a military budget that is the largest since World War II. But without such cuts all the campaign promises about funding domestic programs, from education to healthcare, are an obvious fraud.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NOISE June 15, 2008

Violence does not work. It breaks relationships. This evening my neighbour was playing loud music with a pounding beat. This lasted for about four hours. It was giving me a headache. Eventually the significant other who was attempting to sleep with ear plugs, while I watched the rugby firstly phoned the landline and the mobile for which there were recorded answers, then went next door. She came back and said that the person standing next to her said she was off her face.

Representative Dennis Kucinich – “the gentleman from Ohio” – sets out the case for the impeachment of President G W Bush. Soon after rising to speak in the US House of Representatives, he draws the attention of Speaker Nancy Pelosi that “the House is not in order”, and we hear the audible sigh from the person who declared that impeachment is “off the table”.

Belinda Neal is the Federal Member for Robertson on the Central Coast of New South Wales and the wife of the NSW Education Minister. Apparently, last Friday she was at a restaurant/night club when she objected to being moved from her table and allegedly threatened and verbally abused the staff when she was asked to move tables. Such a trivial request one would assume. The prima facie evidence that Ms Neal was less sober than she admits since her husband, whose drivers licence was under a cloud for drink driving, drove their car home.

“UNDIVIDED JERUSALEM” June 11, 2008

Obama had just won the Democratic Party presidential nomination. It is one thing to accommodate for electoral reasons: it is another to be co-opted. In Chicago he had friends among Palestinians, but later he moved to a more pro-Israel stand, probably because that made electoral sense. He then goes before the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to state:

“Jerusalem must remain the capital of Israel and must remain undivided.”

Furthermore he said : “Israel has a legitimate claim on that city”.
